Since My Integrity is Greater Than Some

Posted by Brett Bittner on August 2, 2008

I am posting this having just left my first day of working on the Bob Barr Presidential campaing, and I want to disclose to anyone who reads this site that I am working as a volunteer.  Other than a couple doughnuts, a slice of pizza, and some friendly encounters, my pay has been nil.  I am working to further the efforts of those already in place in my limited spare time.  I will be covering his campaign events just as I have before, and many of you have already read my extended post about why I am voting for him on November 4th.

There are some people out there that are using their influence to garner a paycheck from Congressional campaigns, and I do not want to be associated with their ilk.  Bloggers have a hard enough time garnering recognition for their efforts in bringing many the news of the day, week, month, and year without someone blowing our crediblity out of the water.

Again, please be aware of my volunteer efforts toward electing someone I think can return America to greatness, Bob Barr.

This Guy OBVIOUSLY Does Not Live In the South

Posted by Brett Bittner on July 3, 2008

As most of you know, I am writing from Atlanta, GA.  I am one of the few native Atlantans found here, as we were surpassed in population while I was still in college by out of town visitors who end up staying here.  Most of these transplants are “Yankees” who moved here for jobs, school, or to escape the harsh winters.  After college, I moved around the country with my job to Indianapolis, Savannah, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and Montgomery before I chose to move back to my home.  For those of you who have never had the chance to visit during July or August, believe me when I say that it is HOT.  And not hot like it is in the desert, but a thick, sticky, sweltering heat.  Having been in the desert near Las Vegas in July, dry heat does not even compare to the misery that a summer in Atlanta without air conditioning would be.  I just had a new Carrier unit installed yesterday for my home, and keeping my cool, in the house, in the car, or at the pool, is very important to me, since I am VERY hot-natured.  In fact, I sweat THINKING about going for a walk.  The programmable thermostat I have keeps my home from burning up in the day, yet provides a conservation of energy, and more importantly to me, a conservation of funds from departing my checking account.  I have taken the time to find out which cost-cutting methods will result in a larger pool of money from which I can retire, buy a new vehicle, or purchase the latest gadget that strikes my fancy.  Call me selfish, but when it comes to conservation, the end result is all about ME.

Today, I was reading a piece on Time.com where the writer, Joe Klein, suggests that “both [Presidential] candidates call for an immediate 5 deg.F thermostat adjustment”.  I had no idea that there were only two people running for the American Presidency, nor did I know that they were so concerned with the temperature of my home.  His suggestion comes under the guise of conservation for the environment, since “air-conditioning is bad for the planet, and for national security, and for our balance-of-payments deficit.”  If you are an anti-capitalist (using the term environmentalist to disguise your intentions), the global warming argument probably makes sense.  Since no one has been able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it exists, I am not a believer, but the other two negatives of using air conditioning are interesting, and I am not sure how A/C directly contributes to them.  Luckily, there is no further explanation in the article.  The piece goes on further to blame the “energy crisis” on George W. Bush’s lack of a call to sacrifice after the events of 9/11/01.  Interesting.

New Bob Barr Event: Speech at Millennium Gate Dedication Ceremony

Posted by Brett Bittner on July 2, 2008

I just got an e-mail from the Barr campaign alerting me to an Independence Day event with the former Georgia Congressman and current Libertarian Presidential candidate.  Bob Barr will be delivering a speech at the dedication ceremony for the Millennium Gate, on Friday, July 4.  The dedication ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a parade, followed by speeches from attending dignitaries  beginning at 1:15 p.m.  The Millennium Gate, which is located at the Atlantic Station in downtown Atlanta, is a 73-foot arch that will celebrate the history of  Georgia.

    Scuffle at Hartsfield

Posted by Brett Bittner on July 2, 2008

***UPDATE #2:  A copy of the complaint filed by Georgia Carry and Tim Bearden, represented by John Monroe, can be found here.***

***UPDATE:  A .pdf copy of the press release by the airport general manager, Ben DeCosta can be found here.  I guess the mayor and airport GM personally distributed the announcement and official press release to all the criminals living in Atlanta  that adhere to the gun laws currently on the books.***

In a more local note, July 1st is the day 400 new laws in Georgia go into effect.  One of those laws being the state granting permission for gun owners to carry concealed, registered weapons in state parks, on public transportation, and establishments that serve alcohol.  The City of Atlanta and officials at Hartsfield Airport here in Atlanta take issue with the law, and they have defied the state law by refusing to lift the ban on guns in the airport’s non-secured side.  Mayor Shirley Franklin and airport general manager Ben DeCosta were served with a copy of a lawsuit by Georgia Carry this morning at a 10 AM press conference called by the city and the airport touting the “gun-free zone.” The last time I checked Shirley Franklin had bigger issues in her administration to grapple with, like $120 million the city is trying desperately to recover in the “revenue shortfall.”
